For most holidaymakers, entering Portugal is refreshingly simple. Portugal is part of the European Union and the Schengen Area, so many nationalities — including UK and US citizens — can visit visa-free for short stays. Below are the questions our travellers ask most often before a holiday in Portugal.

No. UK passport holders can visit Portugal visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, as part of the Schengen Area rules.
No. US passport holders can also visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business.
You may spend up to 90 days inside the Schengen Area within any rolling 180-day period. The window moves with you, so it’s worth counting your days carefully if you travel around Europe frequently.
Your passport should be issued within the previous 10 years and remain valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen Area. We recommend six months’ validity to be safe.
ETIAS is a new online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors to the Schengen Area. Once it launches, eligible travellers will need to apply and pay a small fee online before departure. Check official EU sources for the current start date.
It is not a legal entry requirement for visa-exempt visitors, but we consider comprehensive travel insurance essential for every trip. It is mandatory if you are applying for a Schengen visa.
For longer stays, work, study or residence you will need the appropriate national visa or residence permit, applied for through a Portuguese consulate before you travel.
